Let Them Hear

Description

We are listeners. What we hear and believe shapes who we are. We live in the midst of loud voices demanding our ear. The Law thunders its demands. Satan whispers reminders of our failings. Our flesh joins in a chorus of despair. There is no hope outside hearing and believing the Gospel. The Gospel proclaims our freedom from the curse of sin through the death and resurrection of Christ. The proclamation of the Kingdom of God in Christ assures us of Satan’s defeat and our own resurrection.

This hymn is a prayer for the lost, that God would grant them ears to hear the Good News.

Lyrics

They have heard the Law
Thunder its demands.
They have heard the Great Accuser
Whisper, "You are damned."
They have heard their flesh
And their hearts agree.
Let them hear, O Lord, let them hear!
Let them hear of the Son
Who has taken our place,
Of His death and unmerited grace.
Let them hear how the Judge
Won our pardon through love.
Let them hear, O Lord, let them hear!

They have heard the grave
Threaten to devour.
They have heard the Ancient Serpent
Boasting of his pow’r.
They have heard the earth
Groaning to be free.
Let them hear, O Lord, let them hear!
Let them hear of the Lamb
Who arose from the dead,
Of the Seed who has crushed Satan's head.
Let them hear of the Day
When his people shall rise.
Let them hear, O Lord, let them hear!

They have heard their kings
Rule with evil threats.
They have heard the faithful conquer
With their final breath.
They have heard the call,
"Rise and follow me."
Let them hear, O Lord, let them hear!
Let them hear of the Groom
Who is soon to appear,
Of the God who will dry every tear.
Let them hear of the King
And his life-giving throne.
Let them hear, O Lord, let them hear!

My husband is looking for modern hymns to use in our missions conference. He found this and showed it to me last night. I listened to it over and over, visualizing the many confronted by their mortality since Covid hit the world...those voices of despair and guilt and pain have grown even louder since you wrote this. Such a wonderful prayer! And one we can pray over and over as various people groups flash across the screens of our minds. Thank you. Thank you so much.
